Rick Joy Architects was founded in Tucson, Arizona in 1993 and continues to be owned and operated by Rick Joy. The firm, with a current staff of 35, offers high-concept contemporary design combined with full architectural, interiors and master planning services. Beginning with the firm’s first full building commission, virtually every project has received a multitude of architectural design accolades. With a body of completed work consisting of both private and public commissions, Rick Joy Architects has gained substantial international recognition.
The practice, like the work, strives for a higher ideal: that of a cooperative practice. To cooperate is to act or work with others with a shared vision and common aspiration. Rick sees no disciplinary boundaries, only the boundaries of the design under consideration. Therein lies the need to collectively strive to uncover the generative questions and discover answers through each person’s contribution to advancing the work at hand. That means involving clients, crafts people, fabricators, friends, family and staff every day in the creative process.
Our philosophy and values guide the direction of each new commission and are consistent regardless of scale or complexity. The design team of Rick Joy Architects is actively engaged in a daily process of searching for creative insights with an emphasis on finding connections between the otherwise disparate entities of environment, culture, discipline and architecture.
The firm has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Smithsonian Institute/Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Architecture and has participated in multiple exhibitions while being featured in over 150 publications worldwide. Rick has lectured extensively throughout the United States and around the globe (Finland, Spain, Australia, India, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand and Chile for example), is currently the John C. Portman Chair Visiting Professor in Architecture at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design and is considered an important contributor to the ongoing global discourse on sustainable architecture.
